It's come to our attention that the top part of the ferrite bobbin on the PR4401 board* may be damaged owing to rough handling. We are investigating the exact causes of the damage, which are beyond our control and apologise for any inconvencience caused.
Provided the inductor wire still has its continuity, the circuit should function normally despite damage to the ferrite bobbin. Actual measurements on lightly damaged samples showed a current increase of about 10% w.r.t. intact samples. This is no problem as it only results in slightly higher intensity of the LED.

Hi,
It happened to me also, find a damaged coil.
After testin the circuit and carried out some measurements, I found no problem at all to operate it as it was.
I also carried out some more experiments with home made coils in the range of 10 to 20 uH and all performed ok but some were better.
That depends on the core matterial and the inductance.
Now the coil on my board is replaced with one I wound and has an inductance of 19 uH. Its efficiency is little bit higher than with the original (broken one).
It is an amazing project to experiment with, THANKS ELEKTOR.

I am resident in South Africa and also received a damaged inductor board via snail-mail.However the board functions OK although I did not check current.
Just to let you know.
Really a very nice project and idea that one can build upon!
Thank you very much

The same to me.
My coil on the board was broken too.
A had a look at other boards in a shop
and found not one board with a undemaged
coil. - Not exactly true, on some Elektor`s
the print was missing...

Not only were the tops of ALL the ferrite broken in the W H Smiths stash of magazines.... NONE of the mags had the boards attached - they'd all fallenoff to the bottom of the stand

Hi guys
the problem was that they were only taped bare to the magazine - no bag etc. It was inevitable that most would fall off and break.
I was lucky. I found a show with 8 copies. All the boards were in the bottom of the magazine tray ... and one was perfect
