We have been advised of delays at Freescale programming facilities and this affects the supply of the reday-progrmmed circuit board contained in DigiButler kit # 071102-71.

The provisional date for the supply of kits through the Elektor SHOP will be in week # 22 (26-30 May 2008).

Meanwhile the unprogrammed SMD-prestuffed board # 071102-1 is available and can be ordered. The procedure for DIY programming may be found in article instalment 2 (May 2008 issue).
Further information on TBLCF programming and use will be printed in the July/August 2008 issue.

How about the people who already ordered the kit from elektor shop(like me). Are we going to get the unprogrammed kit or will we have to wait for the full kit?

If you ordered the kit you will get what's advertised ie it will contain a programmed board. ETA = week 21, with a bit of luck, sooner.

There is no 'unprogrammed kit', only an 'unprogrammed board' 071102-1.

Sorry for the delay, it is due to a programming bottleneck at Freescale.

One more question. I'm gonna get the unprogrammed "lite" kit. Do you know when the TBLCE pcbs will be offered from the shop? I've just tried searching for 071102 and all that shows is the main board and the unprogrammed one ... no sign of the TBLCE pcbs..

The TBLCF board is only available from our business partner Eurocircuits (www.thepcbshop.com), this is clearly stated.

Normally PCBs appear on ther pcbshop website about 2-3 weeks after the publication date of the relevant magazine article.

An email to Eurocircuits may help to speed things up.

Hmm

The uk version of the article says:

"PCBs for the TBLCF are supplied through the Elektor Shop as # 071102-2"

I'm now confused, is it Elektor Shop via Elektor website or via thepcbshop.com...

hi Kris,

The logistics for the supply of the TBLCF board were changed by our commercial department after the article was ready for printing, sorry for that.

The information on the SHOP pages (website or page 82 in the printed magazine) is final.

Hi guys

I've ordered the full kit in the last week ... I know it will be a while before I see it.

My only concern is that the website suggested all the SMD parts were installed and the latest magazine explains that in fact 6 need to be fitted.

I've never done SMD ... I have a soldering station with a 60W iron and fairly pointed tip .... but I appreciate advice guidance on how to place these components.

Am I right in assuming that solder pads will already be on the PCB for these components and I just need to accurately place the component on the board and then touch the solder pad with the iron to melt it and secure the component 'legs' one at a time ?

hi Paul,

as explained in the article the SMD parts involved are relatively 'large' ones anyone should be able to solder if you use care and precision. Yes all the pads are available on the board. It's no more difficult than soldering say a four legged BF9xx MOSFET in place.

A 60-watt iron seems to me is a bit too large, 25 watts or less might be more appropriate.

thanks for the response.

My soldering iron is temperature controlled.
Is it ok if I set the temp to something you recommend ?

I don't have a another lower power iron ... but I figured the concern re power related more to potential temp than anything else ...

I usually set it to circa 320c.

Hi!
In connection with the DigiButtler (that I have already ordered) I searched for 071102-11.zip file. No result was found.
I also had no luck, on the Freescale website when searching for ref [1] (the CodeWarrior updates and patches 6.3.) This may be because the URLs are printed on very short lines and it is not quite clear whether the dash at the end of the lines is part of the URL or just indicating that the text is wrapped around. I have tried many possible combinations without success. Since I plan to add new features to the project it would be a must for me to have the suggested S/W.
Due to the font type used, the capital i looks the same as the small case L, though it is fairly easy to figure out.

Shame about the delay .... but I'm sure like others I really appreciate the transparency regarding the problems and the quality assurance. It's a shame a certain other Electronics publication doesn't have the same ethical standards ... Well done

P.S.

Can you respond to my question re the soldering iron. As I say ... I've done no SMD before and I only have the one iron. It is a soldering station with full control over temperature. You suggested a low power iron which I don't have, but I'm assuming the variable is the temperature. Can you confirm I will be ok using this iron if I set the temp to a specific level ... and also let me know what that temp should be.

Hi Paul,

soldered up another prototype the other day using 280 degrees temp.
The SMD transformer on the board follows the usual method: first secure one corner pin, align the device pins to the pads and then quickly and decidedly solder all of them. Remove excess solder with braid.

Hi All

I've done it !! I've put it all together and it worked first time

It looks like the software in not DHCP enabled and mine came on with ip address 192.168.0.151 But still I've managed to connect to it and play around with the relay...ON OFF ON OFF ON OFF ....

Now I need to get the TBCLF talking to it
